Mike R and his health status
« on: June 17, 2017, 08:26:00 AM »
This post on Mike R is directed to those of you who do not follow him on Facebook. As many of you, I have been and am very fortunate to call Mike a friend. You canít ask for a finer person. He is a real gentleman.

Mike was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He underwent surgery recently and has gone through a rather rough recovery. A chemo port was installed on Thursday and the chemotherapy was started at that point.

He will go through 6 months of intensive chemo. He also will have to take multiple medications a day for 3 weeks and then rest a week for a total of 6 times over 6 months. Even with this intensive course of chemo, the cancer usually comes back in 2 out of 3 patients.  About 9% of pancreatic cancer patients make it 5 years.

Mike and Sharon have been active living life to the fullest before the chemo started, given the uncertainties of the future.

The prognosis is not good and it's difficult to accept, certainly for Mike and Sharon but also by people close to them.

Mike has played his banjo some as of late but finds it hard to get back into it.

I know that Mike and Sharon will appreciate your good thoughts and prayers.

Ron

I'm friends with Mike on facebook & he knows my prayers are with him.  After just going through the chemo thing for so long, my heart goes out to him & Sharon.  It's nasty stuff & it takes it's toll. Never give up & never lose hope!!!
If he Hollers let him go.

Thanks Ron for keeping everyone posted... I almost finished my first round of chemo.. They took me off the pills a week early but I did do all the chemo drips. My mouth had formed canker type sores and my throat was extremely sore and raw. My Throat is much better as of today and the sores are going away. The Doctor wanted them to be healed by the time I start my next round on July 13th. So, this is my rest week and today I finally got my appetite back somewhat. Everything I eat taste metalic.  Even though the odds are not that great, I'm shooting for the best and only God knows how long. I only had a less than 20% chance of being a canidate for the operation called the Whipple Procedure which I may have mentioned before, not sure. It turned out to be a 10.5 hr operation. My first chemo drip, the nurse was taking to me and I told her I'd had this procedure and she said "oh, your one of God's Miracles that made it through the operation". Not sure to what extent that means but guess I'm pretty lucky.

Just keep me in your prayers that I can make it "further"...

I think today is the best day in weeks that I"ve had, hope the next half dozen days are good too. The doctor is knocking my chemo pills down from 8 to 6 a day when I start back on them...

Just wanted to update everyone.. I feel well enough to pick the banjo back up so I don't loose too much in between down times. I've been very blessed that I've not had the throwing up that lots of people seem to have but the sore throat was enough of a curse. I'm down about 65 lbs from where I was when this all started..

If it weren't for my faith, I'm not sure where I'd be. It's made a big difference in my attitude although it's been some rough times the past month. I only share this is because, I care about others, faith can make a huge difference I really believe.

I'm gonna try and visit more than I have been as of late, miss everyone..

Mike
I know I'll never be a great player so the only destination I can put on the front of my bus is "FURTHER"..  :Giggly:
