Back To The Banjo; The sequel.
« on: December 22, 2017, 10:34:14 AM »
I'm getting back into a more serious banjo mode the past few weeks.  My old buddy Greg Blake has moved back to the KC area here and put together a band to play a few shows. He is an awesome singer and guitar picker I met about 30 years ago. We are scheduled to play at Knucklehead's Saloon in KC next month then going on a mini tour to IA and NE.  I'm really excited as these guys are excellent musicians and I've got to "up my game" on the banjo, so I can keep up!

The pic is a show we played at the local HABOT music club in KC last Friday night.  I had such an awesome time.  We met in the basement a couple of hours before the show and worked up a set.  I think we did pretty good for not ever performing as a band before.  All the guys are old friends of mine that I've picked with in the past in some capacity, just never all of us as a band.  We got many, many compliments after the show.

Anyhow I got a song list from the boss man the other day so I'm cramming to learn the ones I don't know.  Gotta learn a few melodic lick fiddle tune type things.  I never considered myself a melodic player, I know a couple of licks and that's about it. I've got my work cut out for me! I practiced 3 hours last evening!  I haven't done that in years!  But I enjoyed it.  It's really fun to learn new stuff.

I'm just so excited to get to play with such good musicians and they're all real good guys too!

I'll try to calm down now.  :scared:
Todd

Thanks everyone.   :thanks:

I started working on Whiskey Before Breakfast this morning before heading out to work.  Thanks to Tom Adams youtube video, I got the first part figured out.  Not really melodic, but he plays simple enough I think I'll get it.  :banjo:

I'm just so inspired right now.  I've got this incentive in me to learn a few new tunes.  And try to play as well as I can with this band.

A fiddle player friend of mine has a local band, he says if they play it at church, he calls it "Spirits In The Morning".

I wanted to share a couple of pics with my Banjo Holler buddies.

The Greg Blake Band played a midwest mini-tour last weekend.  Beginning at Knucklehead's Saloon in Kansas City.  That is the band in the last pic. The fiddle player didn't go with us to IA & NE.  We picked up a gal fiddler in IA to play the other show.

Then Friday we drove to North Liberty IA to perform a house concert.  That was my first one of those and I enjoyed that, playing for a small group of bluegrass fans on a cold night.  It was -10 the next morning when we rolled out about 11AM.  :Brrr:  Former Blue Grass Boy, Bob Black lives in nearby Iowa City and came to pick a few with us.  That was awesome!  He is such a nice fella too!  This was actually the 2nd time I had met him within the past 4 years or so.  That's me and him in the 2nd pic. The other pic is Bob giving us quick lesson on a tune he picked called Banjolina. :banjo:

Then on to Lincoln NE to perform for LAFTA at a very nice venue called The Loft in downtown Lincoln on Sat night.  http://www.lafta.net/ And they put us up at the Embassy Suites Hotel a few blocks away.  That's a purdy hi-faluten place, I'll tell ya what. :NoWay:

Greg rented a Ford Explorer and we crammed all out instruments and luggage (including a bass fiddle) in it plus 4 guys with no room to spare!  :NoWay:  We had a great time on the road too.  The camaraderie with the guys was very enjoyable for all of us.  They are great guys to travel with and just hang out with.

Everything went very well, the weather was good for travel also.  I had a tuning malfunction on the first set in KC which took me a few days to get over.  :hammer: Only other problem all weekend was an error at The Embassy with our rooms.  They had reserved 1 room for 3 nights instead of 3 rooms for 1 night.  The nice young man hotel clerk got it straightened for us though.

Thank you.  :thanks:

It really was a wonderful experience.  It gave me a small taste of life on the road, traveling every day and sleeping in strange beds.  I didn't really get that much sleep.  I must have been operating on adrenaline.   :scared: I sure did crash on the divan Sunday afternoon when we got back!  :asleep:

Honestly, when Greg first asked me about going I had some reservations, with obligations at home, work, etc.  But when I found out the other guys were going, I said yes.  I knew we'd sound pretty good as a band.  We had so much fun.  I'd do it again in a heartbeat!  I'm looking forward to the next gig he sets up for us.

You just meet so many nice folks at bluegrass events too.
