Bent neck bolts !
« on: October 05, 2015, 10:25:21 PM »
I got a used Deering Deluxe a while back, traded  for it, and even though it was made in 2008   the guy never played it much at all, didn't even have fingerprints on the head!  I have what equates to 800.00 in it.  A couple months ago  I decided to re profile the neck, the factory profile was far too clubby for me. I have a middle finger on my fretting hand  that is 3/8 shorter than it should be..... long story.  I also fitted it for a Gibson style flange, when I weighed the ring   it was nearly 4#     I put the ring in the ole pie jaws, and turned some weight off of it, it now weighs 3# 4 oz.  The banjo looks, sounds  and plays awesome.  When I re profiled the neck  I never bothered removing the bolts from the neck. I have a fixture I made for spraying the finish on necks, and it works in conjunction with them.

Since I re-profiled the neck I had to machine the rim just a wee bit  in order fit the pre war speck  RK flange on it.  That ended up bringing the action down just a bit.  Yesterday  I changed head tension, by loosening it a bit, and that's when I ran into trouble.  That little bit of tension loss  put me in a spot where I was getting some buzz on the 5th, and 4th.  I decided it was shim time, until I had the time to make an adjustment on the heel cut.  when I shimmed it  I noticed the 3rd  string was off center a bit.  I decided   the heck with it!!  Id cut the heel right away.  When I removed the lag screws  I was just stunned. It appears the were screwed in, then bent !!!

I drilled the screw holes, plugged them with Mahogany  ( same as neck wood)    Cut the heel  installed new screws.   Just shocked me to see those screws installed that way

That seems odd to me.  So do you think the lag bolts were bent intentionally?  Surely not by Deering during factory assembly?

I wouldn't think over tightening would do that.  Seems like the bolts would pull out of the end of the neck or do damage to the rim before they would bend from being over tightened.

I remember a conversation several years ago about this, over on the BHO, and several folks said that this was done intentionally, and helped prevent them from pulling out.

I had repurposed an old Goodtime neck, and had to dowel and re-drill for new studs, and was surprised the factory stud came out bent just like that. Once someone said that helps keep them from pulling out, I thought hmmmmm, makes sense  That's either a great idea, or one hell of a way to explain away a screw up!

The original hole was probably drilled incorrectly, and the bolt was bent to make the neck contact at 90 degrees to the rim, at a 3 degree neck angle.

I wondered about that also.    :ponder:

That is probably the reason it was bent I would have to say,   the angle that bolt is drilled is sure one helluva an oversight especially considering the price range that banjo resides in.  It was a damn good banjo before, and is now, just shocking to see that
